WEB ATF Temperature Sensor On-Vehicle Repair

Understanding the ATF Temperature Sensor

Function and Location

The WEB ATF temperature sensor, short for "Weighted Electronic Brakeforce Transmission," measures the temperature of the automatic transmission fluid (ATF). It is usually located inside the transmission pan or on the transmission case.

Resistance and Temperature Relationship

The ATF temperature sensor is a thermistor, which means its internal resistance changes in response to temperature. As the ATF temperature increases, the resistance decreases, and vice versa.

Testing the ATF Temperature Sensor

Resistance Measurement

To test the ATF temperature sensor, you can measure its resistance at two specific temperatures, typically 68°F (20°C) and 230°F (110°C). You will need a multimeter and a thermometer.

  1. Disconnect the electrical connector from the ATF temperature sensor.
  2. Connect the multimeter to the terminals of the sensor.
  3. Start the engine and allow it to run until it reaches operating temperature.
  4. Use the thermometer to measure the ATF temperature and record the resistance reading from the multimeter.
  5. Compare the resistance reading to the manufacturer's specifications to determine if the sensor is functioning properly.

Troubleshooting and Replacement

If the ATF temperature sensor fails, it may cause the transmission to shift erratically or overheat. To troubleshoot and replace the sensor:

  1. Inspect the electrical connector for corrosion or damage.
  2. Clean or replace the connector as necessary.
  3. Locate the mounting location of the ATF temperature sensor on the transmission.
  4. Unscrew and remove the old sensor.
  5. Apply a thin layer of thread sealant to the threads of the new sensor.
  6. Screw in the new sensor by hand until it is snug.
  7. Tighten the sensor using a socket wrench or torque wrench to the manufacturer's specifications.
  8. Reconnect the electrical connector.
  9. Clear any fault codes using a scan tool.
  10. Test drive the vehicle to ensure the sensor is functioning properly and the transmission is shifting smoothly.
